Friday was the anniversary of both the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and the assault on a U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya.
On September 11, 2020 — to far less consternation and alarm — 1,094 Americans died mostly preventable deaths as a result of a pandemic that’s been allowed to spiral out of control in this country.
Which of these deaths do you suppose Republicans think are the least notable?
So, yes, lots of Americans died of COVID-19 on Friday. And on Saturday. And most likely many, many more will today. Is it fair to compare these events? Arguably, no. But it is fair to compare what happened here to what’s happening just north of us, in Canada.

Canada reported no new deaths from COVID-19 on Friday for the first time in six months. The last time the country reported no new deaths from the virus on March 15, at the start of lockdowns in North America due to the pandemic, Reuters reports.
As of Friday evening, over 6 million people had been tested for COVID-19 in Canada, 2.1% of which came back positive. Some 702 new cases were reported on Friday, but no new deaths, the Public Health Agency of Canada reported.
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, Quebec reported one new death on September 11, but Ontario removed a previously reported death. That meant the number of deaths reported, 9,163, remained unchanged from the previous day.
So while Canadians are breathing a sigh of relief, many Americans are still struggling to breathe at all.
As the numbers improve, "I am reminded of the ways Canadians have pulled together to reduce the spread of COVID-19," Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, said Thursday in a statement. "We have been physically apart from each other in order to plank the curve, but we have found new ways to be together, and connected, while at a distance."
Why are our outcomes so sharply different?
Well, on the one hand, our population in many areas is somewhat more dense. On the other hand, the leader of our federal government is far more dense.
Canada’s not completely out of the woods, of course. The country continues to log cases, and on Saturday, according to Worldometer.info, deaths in the country ticked back up to seven. But we had 707. Our population is roughly nine times that of Canada’s — not 100 times.
Clearly, we’re doing something wrong. Or did something wrong.
And, yeah, I have some clue as to what that was (i.e., we elected the Angel of Death as our president).
Let’s end this nightmare.
