Here's a short reminder that the U.S. Postal Service is being headed up by a corrupt lackey of Donald Trump, a man who has spent lavishly on Republicans in order to buy his post. His previous, probably illegal fundraising has already raised eyebrows, as has his donations to Donald Trump's campaigns. Now we're finding out the extent to which Louis DeJoy went to secure this job: he gave nearly $700,000 to Trump's 2020 convention, just weeks before he got the nod for the job.
New FEC filings uncovered by CNN show that he donated more than $685,000 to the committee that put on the Republican National Convention. You know, the one in which Trump violated the Hatch Act by using the White House as a campaign prop. The Charlotte Host Committee reported four donations from DeJoy occurring between late December of 2018 through late March of 2020. He got the Postmaster General position just weeks later, in May but it was clear in April that he was getting the job, according to David C. Williams a former Postal Service inspector general who resigned as vice chairman of the board of governors as a result.

That $685,000 put DeJoy in competition with some of the nation's biggest corporations—he donated more than software maker Oracle, which gave $500,000, and two leading private prison companies which each gave $250,000. He really wanted this job, one which Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin helped him secure. DeJoy got the job after what Williams described as a bad job interview. DeJoy "didn't strike me as a serious candidate," Williams told the AP, calling. "Governor Barger actually helped him finish a number of sentences before he got stuck" during one interview, Williams said.
In return for that $685,000 DeJoy gave to Trump's convention, the next month he got this plum job for which he was not qualified. And he has thanked his benefactors by embarking on a systematic dismantling of the institution. This is as swampy as it gets. DeJoy gives a shit-ton of money to Trump to get him reelected in 2020, then gets put in a position to help Trump steal the 2020 pandemic election by making sure the mail doesn't work.
It's so swampy, it's worth the House of Representatives impeaching him over. They can do that. They can do that and then the next Justice Department, Joe Biden's Justice Department, can prosecute him. In the meantime, though, the House could fight this corruption by impeaching him. Which would be a blow for good government, and if they did it fast, could derail Mitch McConnell's rush to get Amy Coney Barrett confirmed to the Supreme Court before the election, an election which she would try to help Donald Trump steal.
In case you're noticing a theme here, it's all about Trump doing everything in his power to prevent a fear and fair election that deposes him. Democrats need to do everything in their power to stop him.
