Trump Attorney General William Barr’s latest abuses of the justice system have nine Senate Democrats calling on him to resign. Their letter describes the “unethical political intervention” of top Justice Department officials in the Roger Stone case as “a clear violation of your duty to defend fair, impartial, and equal justice for all Americans.”
Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Richard Blumenthal, Ed Markey, Patty Murray, Jeff Merkley, Chris Van Hollen, Ron Wyden, Bernie Sanders, and Mazie Hirono signed the letter. They point out that, in addition to “interven[ing] in a clearly political fashion to undermine the administration of justice at the President’s behest in order to protect a well-connected political ally,” Barr’s action “demonstrates that you lied to Congress during your confirmation hearing when you stated that you would ‘keep the enforcement process sacrosanct from political influence.’”
Barr will obviously not resign—he’s right where he wants to be, doing exactly what he wants to be doing. But the Democrats can at least draw the media’s attention to the fact that part of what Barr is doing is lying to the media. Along with, of course, causing four prosecutors to quit the Stone case when he dialed back sentencing recommendations for Donald Trump’s buddy and working with Rudy Giuliani to investigate Trump’s political opponents.
