Way back in the long-ago times of October 2019 I wrote Top Comments: Damn I Did Something Edition. Here’s part of that diary’s intro:
So, way back when I was a new writer here, there was this sort-of regular series hosted primarily by cskendrick and mkkendrick. It ran from roughly 2006-2008 and I wrote four diaries under the tag, just as I was starting my tenure here at Top Comments. Not sure who here may remember, but it was called Damn I Did Something. It was primarily a weekly series usually on Tuesdays, and I suspect it’s where my long, longstanding tradition of being our regular Tuesday Top Commenteer has its origins.
Tonight, as I thought about how I and so many other people in my life feel that we’re ‘not doing anything’ or that it’s ‘hard to get anything done’ in these stressful times, it felt like a perfect reason to revisit this theme. So grab a beverage, which if you’re like me tonight has to be cold because yes, yes it’s summer outside, and join me below the story break to see how, even if we think we didn’t, we really DID do something…
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
There’s only a few DIDS ground rules, as I understand it:
1. Large, small, or undefinable, if you did it, it’s a DIDS!
2. That’s all the ground rules.
I’ve got a couple of things I DIDSed:
1. After hemming, hawing and nursing my baby along for two years longer than it had a right to expect because I loathe this activity, I listened to Mr. Brillig say repeatedly it is DEFINITELY OK to replace an aging, gas-guzzling, increasingly unsafe vehicle... and last Friday I DID replace my overly large minivan with a Honda CRV Hybrid. I feel really self-conscious in it, but the dread feeling of “why is my temperature gauge going up so high again, what was that clunking sound, and omg I need gas again?!” is gone and I’d paid it off more than a few years ago.
2. I went to a meeting (via Zoom, of course) of a local group formed to take concrete steps to help dismantle systemic bias in our schools, city offices and civic spaces. Still not sure how I fit into the group dynamic, but it felt right to show up.
3. With Mr. Brillig, I binge-watched all 9 episodes of the limited-series The Watchmen during HBO’s weekend free streaming. I’m still speechless and processing my thoughts after the ending.
4. During said binge I ate a full pint of Enlightened Keto Red Velvet Ice Cream. Remember Rule 1 of DIDS, and the obvious corollary- don’t judge anothers DIDS.
What did you DIDS recently? Please share in the comments, after first perusing the Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures that BeninSC DIDS carefully collate!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers, Barack Obama or DailyKos. From aitchdee:
Herewith I submit this comment by longtime dailykos member KenBee for your consideration to Top Comments. I’ve lifted it from a huge comment section just chockful of insightful remarks; I just found KenBee’s musings on empathy as well as his shout-out to our intrepid young protestors especially insightful and moving and well-put. It’s the final two paragraphs that chiefly caught my eye. (Submission lightly edited for inclusion tonight.)

In
Georgia Logothetis's
APR this morning, poor
Chitown Kev was just trying to share a story about a maskless coffee vendor, but it was early in the morning and somehow,
many of the letters in his first sentence were late to work. Undaunted,
learn took the available letters
and ran with them, in two consecutive replies. This was one of those silly things that just made me laugh helplessly for a while, but honestly, if anyone can teach a rabbit Proust, I believe it would be Chitown Kev.
