Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
My broken molar decided to crumble further and become painful. So I had a trip out of the house to the OHSU Dental School yesterday. I’ve only been out of the house a handful of times since we first locked down (and only for medical appointments). So this was an event for me.
By now, everybody knows the drama that has been happening in Portland. “Little Green Men” have been sent in to quell the alleged anarchy happening here. The President has said the situation in Portland is “worse than Afghanistan”.
We haven’t seen any evidence of anarchy in the SE, where I live, that’s for sure. But the Dental School is on the west side of the river. Any anarchy over there? Nope.
No anarchy toward the river, either.
After my appointment, Ann took me on a brief tour of downtown. I snapped some pictures from the moving car with my phone. These aren’t elegant compositions but you’ll get the idea.
There were some beautifully executed artwork on boarded windows commemorating George Floyd and Breonna Taylor (a number of them). There were numerous graffitied “BLM”s around, like a cri de coeur from the soul of the city, the soul of the people. But Afghanistan? Really? A war zone? Oh come on. It seems you want to make it one, Mr. Trump, with your Little Green Men. Our elected representatives have made it clear how we feel about that.
You know, I’m not a veteran. But if I were, I would shake my head that the Commander in Chief thinks a comfortable, functioning first world city is anything like an area that has endured decades of real warfare and where so many of our service people lost their lives or come home with lifelong wounds. Lord love a duck. I’m speechless.
I am also very worried for the future.
The weekend begins now. Come in, be comfortable, and share your day, your weekend plans, your menus! This is an open thread.
