You could argue that if Barack Obama had incited a riot on the United States Capitol Building during a Joint Session of Congress where both the Vice President and Speaker of the House were presiding (minutes after giving a speech to his supporters), he would be impeached immediately, but that argument is irrelevant: we know that Barack Obama, and most of the presidents in the last century, would never consider undermining the democracy he swore an oath to protect. Donald Trump, on the other hand, does it daily.
The nation watched in horror as domestic terrorists attacked the Capitol Building, but not surprise—Donald Trump has spewed the same idiotic, racist nonsense for years, and the only people he charmed bought a fake persona who exhibited success. I’m not interested in why they excused his behavior that started in the ‘70s, when he discriminated against black people looking for apartments, or why they covered their ears when he accused the first Black president of being born outside the United States.
Donald Trump has always been the same, and personal economic uncertainty isn’t an excuse to support a fascist.
The left has been told to try and understand his supporters, but perhaps all we’ve done is enable them to believe that in times of personal crisis, resorting to extreme measures, like voting in a demagogue, is a reasonable solution. The media has labeled his tweets “false,” or his speeches “racially insensitive,” instead of calling him, his actions, and the purpose of his Administration what it is, and will always be: lies, and a vehicle to restore an America angry white men were reminded they would never get back after the election of the first Black president.
