Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
The Food Network has some riffs on classic Halloween treats — fancy stuff I can’t imagine my mother ever making when I was little — but I think they are cool. Check out Layered Candy Corn Pie. If you’ve got five or six hours to spare, this could be fun to make.
But remember when living dangerously:
Or how about Red Velvet Vampire Cupcakes? These are stinkin’ cute. I don’t bake with wheat flour anymore but if I did…
There’s lots more…you can peruse forty-nine food porn worthy Halloween party treats here.
Speaking of vampires, as you know, board games are my jam. There’s a new one that hasn’t hit the shelves yet due to supply chain issues— but it would be fun to play next Halloween. It’s called The Hunger and in it, you get to be a vampire, racing out of your creepy castle at night to feed and racing back before the rising sun barbecues you. Sounds like fun for kids of all ages.
This Halloween, we are all fatigued from dealing with real monsters and horrors on a daily basis — whether they be human sociopaths with megaphones, an invisible deadly contagion, gun violence, or a poisoned planet that is in upheaval with fires, storms, and other disasters. It has been exhausting, at the very least. A humorous game offers a little relief. Ann and I like to play Horrified on Halloween, a silly game in which players cooperatively defend a town and its citizens from classic Universal movie monsters such as Dracula, the Mummy, and the Creature from theBlack Lagoon. We love this game. It’s goofy and you get to defeat little plastic monsters. What’s not to like? Well, there is a new version coming out that offers American cryptids to battle — the Mothman, Bigfoot, the Jersey Devil, etc. Once again, supply chain problems mean the game is not on shelves yet but soon it will be at Target and other big box stores (where you can find the original Horrified right now).
Portland, Oregon is really, really into Halloween so there are a number of things going on. Here are a couple of examples.
The Davis Graveyard is back after taking last year off — an ordinary suburban house that becomes a world class haunted spectacle in October. And I do mean world class. This is how it was in 2019:
And tomorrow, many, many witches and warlocks are going to brave the cold water of the Willamette River for the Stand up Paddle Board Witch Paddle. I really want to see this. Here is a clip from a couple years ago:
But hey, you may prefer to hunker down with a good book this Halloween weekend. If so, Bookbub has curated some titles for you: 12 Books to Read Based on Your Favorite Halloween Candy.
What are the Halloween happenings where you live? Are you doing anything special or lying low (like we are)? The weekend begins now. Come in, share your day, your weekend plans, your menus! This is an open thread.
