Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
Good evening, friends. I confess to feeling a bit anxious as the pandemic drags on and fears about social unrest after Jan. 6 have not settled — especially as the impeachment trial is approaching. I am so, so thankful that we have Pres. Biden and VP Harris at the helm now. But I, maybe like you, am looking for comforting and uplifting things. So please share anything that makes you smile or sparks hope. It doesn’t have to be big. Good things add up!
Here are a few things I have come across recently:
Ida B. Wells-Barnett chosen as new namesake for SW Portland’s Wilson High School From The Oregonian:
In July, Wilson High Principal Filip Hristic announced the building would be given a new namesake. The 28th President of the United States was long criticized by the school community for his support of the Ku Klux Klan and segregation of federal offices.
In addition to her work as an investigative journalist, Wells-Barnett was also co-founder of the NAACP. Despite racism in the women’s suffrage movement, she worked to get all women including Black women the right to vote.
Renaming of other schools around Portland is ongoing. These changes matter and are a sign of a positive shift in social consciousness, I think.
Jon Batiste plays music on Stephen Colbert’s show, a show I watch bits of on YouTube. Therefore some of Jon Batiste’s music videos started showing up, too. This is a happy ear worm:
And the dancing in this one is awe inspiring. It’s beautiful.
Did you know there is an entire section on Etsy called “Chucks and Pearls”? There is! All sorts of T-shirts and other things to celebrate our new VP. I like the slogan, Be sure to wear shoes, ladies. There’s glass everywhere.
The weekend begins now. Come in, be comfortable, and share your day, your weekend plans, your menus!
