If you sort through the dustbins of history you will find old flyers printed with Bush-Quayle headlines wadded up in the corner. Remembered for being the target of the “you’re no Jack Kennedy” debate skewering and for misspelling “potato” in a spelling bee Quayle actually had to talk Pence out of going along with the White House coup.
As new charges are being filed against Oath Keepers and others it is chilling to remember that Dan “earth is on the same orbit as mars” Quayle was the only thing standing between democracy and small fingered dictatorship.
According to the Woodward book “Peril” the following conversation took place during the insurrection:
“Mike, you have no flexibility on this. None. Zero. Forget it. Put it away,” Quayle told Pence, according to the authors.
“You don't know the position I'm in,” Pence reportedly said, again asking Quayle if he had any options.
“I do know the position you're in,” responded Quayle, who was vice president to the last incumbent president to lose an election. “I also know what the law is. You listen to the parliamentarian. That's all you do. You have no power.”
A reminder that a Republic only lasts “if you can keep it” according to Ben Franklin.
Franklin also went on to say, “The executive will be always increasing here, as elsewhere, till it ends in a monarchy.”
