Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor and theologian who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps. Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me —
and there was no one left to speak for me.
The last weekend of January, neo-Nazis were causing problems in Florida). And in New Jersey, a snowplow driver thought it was great sport to spray snow slush on Orthodox Jewish folks.
This morning, a colleague of mine, Mikey Weinstein of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, sent to me and other mutual colleagues an email that he received over the weekend. I quote [with original poor grammar], “Mickey you and your Military Religious Against Freedom Foundation are a living disease called jewboyitis. Don’t need no vaccine against you and your fellow kikes. Just gotta fire up them camp ovens once again. Worked well before and will again. The globalism international jew is the source of all America’s problems. Snap Crackle Pop! LET’S GO BRANDON!” My other colleagues (three retired Christian Army colonel chaplains and a Christian former Marine fighter pilot) and I have been receiving this hate-filled sewage for years forwarded from Mikey so that we could be witnesses to this steady stream of harassment. The sludge is vile and disgusting -- and against everything this nation was founded upon.
What would Martin Niemöller do? I think he would speak up and raise concerns. I am!
