The Supreme Court's evisceration of abortion rights has moved the battleground to the states, and now abortion is on the ballot—literally.
Dedicated activists are fighting hard to protect the right to abortion across the country in three states where ballot measures will soon go before voters. Daily Kos has identified the lead organization in each state leading that fight, and we're asking for your support in helping them.
In Kansas, Republican lawmakers have put a measure on the Aug. 2 ballot to overturn a 2019 state Supreme Court ruling that held the state constitution guarantees the right to an abortion by amending the constitution to explicitly say it does not provide such a guarantee. It's critical we stop this effort, because the GOP-run legislature will immediately seek to restrict or ban abortion if the measure passes.
In Kentucky, a similar amendment will appear on the ballot in November. There, the state courts just temporarily blocked a total ban on abortion, but if this amendment becomes law, then the courts will be powerless to intervene.
And in Michigan, activists are very close to putting a measure on the ballot this fall that would amend the state constitution to include an affirmative right to an abortion. A 1931 state law banning abortion has been blocked for the moment by the courts, but it could come back into effect—and Republican lawmakers are eager to let that happen. This amendment would render that 91-year-old law a dead letter.
If we succeed in these states, we will protect a fundamental right for millions of people. If we fail, countless more will be plunged into darkness.
