Read the tiny, one story carefully, and learn to pay attention to details. Abbott came to Uvalde IN SECRET, left IN SECRET, met with NO LOCAL OFFICIALS, took NO QUESTIONS from the media, then his spox likely told ALL media about his glorious visit and ONE news agency printed a no-picture, no new video story that mentions his unpopularity IN THE HEADLINE. ABC news was provided with at least ONE contact to confirm the visit took place, and they got a TEPID quote to print.
While the VERY casual observer might see this and say, “Greg Abbott has compassion for Uvalde,” the real picture here is completely opposite. It’s a gigantic fail for his team on a week when Beto O’Roarke is going viral for calling a heckler a MFer for not caring about wounded children.
Last time Abbott went to Uvalde, over a week ago, he did the same thing, snuck in, met with people who NEED THE MONEY they have been promised from the state of Texas (and will not get until AFTER the election) and these people were not impressed. But that time Abbott managed to do an interview with a San Antonio local news anchor and it was PATHETIC. Unable to credibly answer basic questions, he sputtered canned answers that fell flat for five minutes. He looked as though he was broadcasting from a broom closet as his people, NOT THE TV STATION set him up on a Zoom camera in front of a couple of flags and a blue curtain with no space surrounding him. It looked BAD, and even that was some sort of a victory for his team as the split screen said UVALDE on it.
This time he didn't even make the attempt to generate any video "proof" that he visits Uvalde or cares about dying children. It's possible his handlers tried to set something up and no one wanted to participate in such a farce. ABC news has a novel "Uvalde 365" initiative to promote, where they claim they wont do parachute journalism over a child massacre, and have pledged to, basically, leave some stringers to file stories on "community and recovery" or some such fluff. I dis-remember the exact words but it deliberately does NOT promise accountability, investigation or hard news. Basically they will file stories about memorials/murals and little league and some back to school stuff eventually. Absent some major leak, there will be no more hard news about what happened that day. The "Dead shooter loophole" and the specter of (meaningless) "ongoing investigations" has slammed a lid on the press and public learning what went so terribly wrong in that school hallway for 77 horrific yet predictable minutes while 376 LEOs failed to stop a massacre of two classrooms of children by a teenage shooter armed with a battlefield weapon and over 1000 hollow point bullets, which he fired at near point-blank range, murdering 19 children and 2 teachers, and wounding many others.
The truth is, the governor of Texas is persona no grata all over the state. He's held no open press conferences, and no town halls all summer, and now school is starting up with no new state laws addressing the gun massacre situation.
