Normally I'm a major Bill Maher fan. I tend to agree with him more than almost anyone else on most issues. Wokism, the middle east, the republiscum party, religion, etc.
But sometimes he does go to a place I can't agree with, that happened on his Aug. 5, 2022 show. He launched another diatribe against overweight people.
Ok, I get it, Bill has problems with overweight people. My guess is he taunted some in school and they beat him to a pulp over it.
But Bill really does go too far with bashing overweight people, especially when he pulls the 'concern trolling” bit. I mean, he's like that 'the fat whisperer” cartoon. I'd link to it but it would probably violate some sort of rule here so just look it up.
I think Bill really should try to have some more understanding for people with weight issues. I mean, get over the times he insulted some fat kid in school, got his face punched in and try to realize there are a lot of issues here.
First off, not everyone can have a superiority complex that burns 5,000 calories a day which makes it impossible for them to gain weight. ;)
Secondly, Bill has never hesitated to point a finger at corporate America, some of his best segments have been attacking them. My personal favorite was the “Capitalism eats everything” segment which I regard as a masterpiece.
But Bill always seem to point the same finger at people suffering with weight problems, and yes, we do suffer a lot. Maybe he should look at how the food corporations in America have contributed to the obesity epidemic. First they create horrible stuff that should “not even be considered food”, as Hannibal Lecter might say.
Then they market it to kids. They have roomfulls of college educated experts in psychology, art, writing and other 'marketing” skills coming up with cartoon characters, colorful packages, images of happy young people, ad infinitum, to get kids to buy and eat it. They craft the stuff they sell to be as big a kick to the pleasure center of the brain, I.E. as addictive, as possible by loading it with salt, fat and other elements the human physiology is keyed to find desirable thru evolutionary adaptation.
Plus they link it to other things kids like, such as video games. The Halo game series was giving bonus game items lie weapons and armor, to people who sent it codes taken from mountain dew and cheetos, I believe. Two of the worse things a person can eat, and getting them to buy and obviously ingest them while playing a popular video game, doubling the pleasure/addiction factor.
Corporate apologists will say the kids didn't have to consume the cheetos and mountain dew. Yeah, that's why I don't even bother responding to corporate apologists anymore.
I guess targeting kids with ads for terrible things to consume is how they made up the lost revenue of not being able to push tobacco on kids with Joe Camel.
Maybe Bill should look at doing a bit on how the corporations target children for fatty, salty, harmful, addictive stuff that the human metabolism was never meant to process. Maybe we could even look at laws to restrict or eliminate ads aimed at kids which push fattening, addictive and non nutritious chemical constructs to kids. We managed to do it to tobacco corporations eventually.
Of course it will be a hard struggle, as we have a political party in America wholly dedicated to corporate profits uber alles. To the party of McConnell, Paul, Taylor, Graham, etc in a contest between the health of America's children and corporate profits, America's children don't even come in third…
Btw I'm aware there are some format issues but I type these on my WP software which isn't Microsoft and it seems to have an issue with spacing here.
