I have brought up the subject of expanding the UN Security Council from 5 to 11 permanent members for many years. When the UN was organized, in 1945-1946, the 5 permanent members, were basically the winners ( or survivors ) of WW2. The United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia and China. Since 1945 France, the United Kingdom and Russia, have basically lost their colonial empires. The world of 1945 is very different from today. For the United Nations to not only survive, but to grow and become more relative in the lives of billions of people, the Security Council must expand to directly represent the many billions of people NOT represented in the UNs, most important body. The 6 additional nations- Mexico and Brazil: to represent South America, Central America. Mexico is larger in population than both France and the UK. The next 2 nations are Nigeria and Egypt. They would both represent the African continent, with Nigeria representing the Sub Sahara and Egypt would be representing Northern Africa and the greater Middle East. Nigeria is one of only 7 nations on Earth with more than 200 million people. The final 2 are India and the Philippines. India would represent the independent group of nations as well as the Indian Ocean region. The Philippines, is the 13th largest nation in terms of population, it borders both the Pacific Rim and the South China Sea, one of the most strategically important locations on Earth. I have been watching the General Assembly and Security Council meetings during the past 3 months and have found the UN Ambassadors from Mexico, Ireland and Armenia especially mature, knowledgeable. A 5 member Security Council, which includes the power of a Veto, limits the flexibility of the political structure to resolve disputes in a timely manner.
