I have been playing guitar professionally / semi-professionally for 40 years and there are few guitar players that I might revere more than Jeff Beck.
Maybe Hendrix, SRV, Page and Gilmore would be in the running but, there is just something, or was just something, about Beck’s playing that was so unique and different from everyone else. I can emulate Hendrix, SRV, Page and Gilmore, but Beck’s “voice” on guitar was unmistakable and unrepeatable. When my guitar player friends were listening to Yngwie Malmsteen for inspiration I was listening to Wired and Blow by Blow. After all this time I still listen in awe and shake my head at his playing.
It looks like he passed away at 78. It was coming, it’s coming for all of us, doesn’t change the fact that I find myself a little at a loss for words and very sad.
