I do wish KOS writers would stop with all the breathless, excited chatter about “impending indictments” of Trump. It seems increasingly unlikely that he will ever be indicted, much less prosecuted. Why do I say this? Simple: evidence of his crimes have been extensively documented for well over a year, investigations have been going on for at least that long, grand juries have been empaneled and reached their conclusions, and yet no indictments are forthcoming. Just a lot of meaningless chatter.
For months we have been hearing that Letitia James in New York and Fani Willis in Georgia are preparing indictments, and for months there has been nothing. What is taking so long?
It seems they are purposely sitting on their thumbs, afraid of what an indictment will cause, and hoping the longer they delay the easier it will be for Trump to weasel his way out. (See tjlord’s recent post (www.dailykos.com/...) for an example of how he will manage to do this.
And what about the DOJ? The January 6 committee compiled massive, documented evidence of Trump’s crimes regarding the insurrection. No further investigation was necessary. Nonetheless, Garland did the cowardly thing and appointed a special prosecutor (Jack Smith) to re-investigate the whole thing. It was a delaying tactic.
All of these attorneys general know that if they twiddle their thumbs long enough, Trump will find a way to weasel himself out, relieving them of the possible consequences of an indictment. Constantly hinting at indictment but never issuing one just gives Trump more time to come up with delaying tactics. I think they know this and are doing it on purpose. “Oh well,” they will be able to say, “we tried, but now our hands are tied.” Or, “Gee, now it’s too late.” Or, “Gosh, the statute of Limitations has been exceeded. Bummer.”
I hope I’m wrong, but the longer we go without any actual indictment, the more it will become clear that there never will be one.
