Last Friday I had to go to the Post Office. Next door to it is a small antique shop. I’d been vaguely curious about the place for years, but never had the time to stop in. However, that day, they had their sidewalk covered with enticing antiques and oddities, old games, old toys, musical instruments, vinyl albums. Out in the parking lot they had gleaming wood furniture. Everything was discounted by 50%. How could I resist?
DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too!
I browsed. I resisted all the furniture. (Why do I feel an urge to acquire furniture?) Tucked away in a dark corner, behind several framed pictures, I spotted the corner of an interesting piece of needlework. I dug it out and took it into the light.
Oh. My. Heavens! Framed and matted petit pointe! Twenty-five octagonal vignettes of flowers and animals! All different. I can’t identify all of them, especially the flowers. Perhaps you all can help me!
The work is neither signed nor dated. The fabric covering the back is thin and worn and ripped in several places. I think it was probably stitched between the mid-1930s and the early-1940s, based on the colors, design and style.
The frame is a little beat up and I think the piece deserves an upgrade to its plain, single matting. I think I’ll reframe it (into the same frame cleaned up some) and it will be the main artwork in my guest room. It will go well with my grandmother’s bedroom furniture in there!
Here are a couple more close-ups of single vignettes.
The best part? I bought this beautiful piece of art for $30!
I hope you enjoyed having a look at this lovely piece of needlework. Please show us what you are working on!

We NEED diarists!
Your diary can be elaborate and full of photos, a simple story of your own quilting history or that of someone you love, a discussion of a current project or a technique you're learning, new adventures... You could post quilt retreat-day recipes (things like crockpot meals, so food appears without much attention from you)…
We could do show and tell or open thread, also, but either way, we need diarists to host. It is EASY if you're willing to take the chance. We NEED diarists!
