There is a debate about whether Donald Trump was the cause or the effect of bigotry becoming dominant within the right. The answer appears to be: why not both?! In a party consisting of decent human beings, a turd like Donald Trump would never ever have been allowed to rise to power. Open bigotry was rejected by Former President George W Bush. He had a diverse cabinet. His $25 Billion investment to fight disease in Africa was good.
The 2008 Republican Party nominee for president John McCain corrected a supporter who claimed then Senator Obama was not a Christian, but rather a Muslim. On the other hand, he allowed Sarah Palin to say that he "palled around with terrorists", a terrible misrepresentation of reality.
The Republicans have always hated when there was some advance in the fight for social justice, especially with African Americans. They couldn't stand that an African American man was president. This lead to whitelash. They welcomed his offerings. His rise in popularity within the Republican Party began by his promotion of birtherism the bigoted conspiracy theory that says Former President Obama was not born in Hawaii in the United States, but rather in Kenya. He has persistently emphasized Former President Obama's middle name.
Donald Trump has anti-social personality disorder. He is a malignant narcissist. He is an ugly bigotry. He has no character or integrity or empathy. He knows of no loyalty. We have known what he's all about.
What he has unintentionally done is that he has revealed the complete and utter lack of character among Republicans in Congress. Former US Representative Liz Cheney has well said, "There will come a time when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain." Donald Trump has said that he will not run for reelection in 2028 when he loses this election. That should have given prominent Republican elected officials some pause. They seem infected by Donald Trump's extreme present hedonism.
Tom Emmer is supposed to be a "normie", but he could not bring himself to condemn the disgusting bigoted trope brought out again, this time against Vice President Kamala Harris.

Steve Schmidt made a good point. It's still, however, shocking. He asks why we would expect Tom Emmer or any prominent Republican elected official to condemn Donald Trump's vile bigoted speech or actions now when they didn't condemn anything that he has said or done previously which included blatant bigotry and felonies, an attempted coup, and an armed insurrection. Nevertheless, to hear this garbage come out of his mouth is still stunning. What's worse is that prominent Republican elected officials aren't there to condemn it.
It's kind of a sport for them as it is for his communications team. They, people like Lindsey Graham, play Politico and other media. When the media finally dutifully calls Republicans who make themselves available to ask if they condemn Donald Trump's latest examples of bigotry, they use the opportunity to play the media. They aren't there to condemn Donald Trump's latest example of bigotry and ignorance.
It's a game. Donald Trump says or does something that is very bigoted. These Republicans make themselves available for the media to offer comments on his latest. If they were there to condemn his last example of blatant bigotry, they would plainly do so and stop there. But instead they avoid the question, refuse to condemn his bigotry, and instead launch an attack against Vice President Kamala Harris. They say something like, he should be talking about how she's so terrible on this or that policy ...
Vice President Kamala Harris is going to win this presidential election and defeat Donald Trump. Donald Trump has said that he will not run again if he loses this election. These people like Tom Emmer should be thinking about that.
When she defeats Donald Trump, we are not going to let up on people like Tom Emmer and all the Republicans in Congress who would not condemn Donald Trump and the terrible things he said and did. His refusal to condemn Donald Trump for saying that she was "born mentally disabled" should be played constantly. Even if his current constituents are mostly okay with this, he should not be able to go out in public without shame. He shouldn't be allowed in decent society. When the history of this period of American life is written, Tom Emmer's children and grandchildren are going to grow up ashamed of him.
Donald Trump revealed the terrible character of politically powerful Republicans, Republicans in Congress, and their Republican voters. He has revealed the evil center of the Republican Party. That's the favor he did us. Unfortunately, he has done us this favor at great cost to vulnerable people, members of marginalized communities, and at an almost incalculable cost to this nation and our place in the world.
