So maybe the UK just doesn’t get us, and I should cut them some slack. I am an MSNBC loyal viewer, paying $45/month for Sling for no other reason than to access MSNBC. Seriously, MSNBC. If you offered me a subscription for less than that I would grab it and drop Sling in a hot minute. I used to also pay for Sirius/XM until I made myself work through streaming it through my phone into my car. But I am one of the apparent millions of us who have not been watching since the election.
I am bummed. In 2016, I was able to tell myself maybe people didn’t really understand what they were voting for. And lots of people have been telling me that a vast majority of Americans read at a 6th grade level and don’t tune in and don’t know how to distinguish good information from bad. Okay. But I feel pretty certain of this: Trump’s message of racism, misogyny and violence got through to most everyone. And they were buying what he was selling. And that makes me sad. And I don’t really want to think about it right now. I want to enjoy the holidays and not think about what assholes people can be. I am not interested in exploring them on a deeper level, trying to understand what they were thinking or trying to figure out why blue collar voters voted for the union buster instead of the party that walks picket lines with them and bails out their pensions. I know why. Trump’s message of racism, misogyny and violence appealed to them. Period. And I do not believe that we need to adopt that message. He will f*** them over and drive the economy into a ditch like Republicans do EVERY TIME we let them run things. And they will go the other direction. And we will fix things, and they will feel comfortable enough to once again believe they can indulge in casting a vote on social issues. And so on. And so on.
So I will be back in the game in January… trying to figure out how one can fight the good fight in a gerrymandered, supermajority red state, making sure rural voters and union voters understand the pain they experience comes from Trump. I will be watching Rachel and Joy and Lawrence and Nicole… who are hands down the ones that I keep paying the fee to see. We have not abandoned our information sources. We just need a little time to grieve over the fact that, once again, America has reminded us that we haven’t come as far as we keep hoping we have.
