Way back in the Olden Times of Daily Kos, from 2006-2008 (and a 2009 outlier), there was a semiregular diary series called Damn I Did Something. The series was primarily helmed by cskendrick, but others wrote some including my four. The series languished, and then in 2019 I revived the tag for a Top Comments diary. I wrote one several months into pandemic lockdown when we all felt we ‘weren’t doing anything’, and then again a little under a year later when I mastered Pandemic Yogurt.
It’s been a long full week since my last Top Comments, and I’m feeling the exhaustion tonight. Which got me to thinking about what Had Been Done, and so I decided it was time for another Damn I Did Something.
For those new to Damn I Did Something, here’s the ground rules as I understand them:
1. Large, Small, or Undefinable, if you did it it’s a DIDS!
2. That’s all of the ground rules.
2024 addition by me: Only the person sharing the DIDS gets to decide if it’s a DIDS. Do not yuck someone elses DIDS
The first of my DIDSes may not seem like one of mine, unless you have shepherded another being to adulthood. This past Saturday, my son walked across the stage and received his high school diploma. That’s his DIDS. I DID successfully complete my time as a K-12 parent and I no longer have to get up early to make lunches, find homework or school uniforms, sign permission slips or absence notes, or any of the myriad other things those with young humans in school have to do. It’s something I’ve done since 2003 and while yes, I miss having younger children and all the specialness of those times, I am ready to embrace this next phase of life!!
My second DIDS is from today… as those of you who read my diaries here or as part of the Kos Diabetes Group know, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in January 2016 and for most of that time have been managing it with a combination of metformin and a lowcarb, ketogenic diet. Diabetes is a progressive disease, and every year at my physical we check to see how my numbers are doing. Every year I’m nervous, wondering if despite my best efforts to manage my metabolism I’ll hear the words “your disease is worsening”.
Today was my annual physical, and I have successfully kept my A1c (a 3-month average measure of blood sugar) at a very respectable 5.8 (a normal A1c is 5.7, and at the time of my diagnosis I was at 7.6). And I DID this without feeling food-deprived — yes, I’d love to eat dessert out but I like my eyesight and toes more! We aren’t adding meds at this time in addition to my metformin, which had been a worry of mine as I REALLY do not want to go down the GLP-1/Ozempic pathway until absolutely necessary.
So those are my DIDSes, and tomorrow I WILL be enjoying a 3-mile walk around a nearby lake with a good friend. What are your DIDSes? Share them with us in the comments so we can all cheer you on!! And if one of your DIDSes is NOT “I submitted a Top Comment nomination”, well, please consider DOING that tomorrow!! :)

TOP COMMENTS
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments?
