Yesterday I posted this: ”Joe Biden should bow out. Democrats desperately need a stronger, more vigorous candidate.”
A number of critics weighed in, though insults (“Fuck off”) and accusations (of my being a “troll,” of repeating “right wing talking points,” etc.) dominated the critical comments. But I get that folks are angry. And though some are sanguine about Biden’s prospects of defeating Trump, I’m sure others are worried. I sure am. And, as some suggested, they are tired of debating this issue. For Mr. Biden to bow out at this stage would be extraordinary in modern American politics. But, “Shut up. Just shut up” won’t make the concerns about the president’s mental lapses and confusion go away.
Some readers did find reason to agree with my point of view and there were a number of thoughtful responses to the critics. I assume, though I can’t be certain, that most of these folks voted for Joe Biden in the 2024 Democratic primary (as I did), but what they’ve learned since the debate has prompted them to reassess the Democratic ticket. As I have.
I don’t have a lot more to say. Other folks are more articulate and perhaps more persuasive in making the case I tried to make. I was impressed by the comments that David Kurtz passed along at TPM today by folks who disagreed with what he had to say the day before.
