Many times we see assassinations, fires, huge explosions, train derailments and other assorted acts of sabotage in places far removed from the front lines of the Russo-Ukrainian war and we can’t help but wonder … how in the heck did that happen? Invariably people would in a jocular fashion credit some of these events to “careless Russian cigarette smoking”. Perhaps.
But it is also obvious that a lot of these events do not involve acts of cigarette smoking at all. The unexplained train derailments, ambushes of Russian soldiers in towns, sudden death of turn coat erstwhile Ukrainian officials in occupied Ukraine, poisoning of Russian soldiers by nubile Ukrainian damsels who then disappear silently into the night. The list of such disquieting events to the Russian occupiers is seemingly endless. And they seem to happen every day now.
These events are now also happening with increasing frequency in Russia itself. But who are the shadowy people behind all of this? Some experts and observers attribute these attacks and a significant number of Ukraine’s intelligence successes as well as some of the major attacks in Ukraine, Crimea and Russia to humint(human intelligence) provided to the Ukrainian intelligence services by Atesh partisans. The online site Militant Wire describes Atesh as follows:
The Atesh Movement is a collection of ethnic Ukrainian, Russian and Crimean Tatar partisans working to assist the Ukrainian state in fighting against Russia’s widened invasion of it. The group assists in target acquisition, conducts psychological warfare, and engages in organisational infiltration and partisan warfare. Despite its active presence on social media, Atesh receives sparse media coverage.

In a write up about the organization the online site The Week also says this about Atesh:
As well as choosing the Crimean Tatar word for "fire" for their name, the group issued a statement on the Telegram social media app that declared its aims were "to fight for the Ukrainian state" in any way possible. That included acting as double agents within the Russian military.(emphasis mine)

Despite extensive and intensive efforts by Russian officials led by the infamous FSB to crack down on Atesh, the organization seemingly continues to grow and becomes more lethal to Russia’s war effort. The Russians have their work cut out for them. As of 2010, there were an estimated 5.3 million ethnic Tatars in Russia alone(Wikipedia). And even after serial deportations and repression during the Soviet era, nearly 300,000 Tatars remain in Crimea.
A people determined and fully purposed to gaining their FREEDOM cannot be defeated.
