One of the many controversies that have followed former President Donald Trump and his blatant disrespect for American veterans was his use of the terms “suckers” and “losers” for men and women who paid the ultimate price for freedom…death. Like most lies by Trump, he denies the reports by his former Chief of Staff, Gen. John Kelly, and thus the dance began. That dance of media manipulation was best described by former President Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich. Reich, who also served in Republican and Democratic administrations, in a video entitled, Trump’s10 Steps for Turning Lies into Truth. Possibly the most accurate description of the progression of Trump's lies aided by a willing media.
Aside from the even more recent set of lies by Mr. Trump, kids getting gender-affirming surgery from schools, tariffs are taxes on foreign countries (only), and claiming nothing happened—"no anything” at Arlington Cemetery have shrouded even more salient points in recent months and days. Why has the media chosen to hide the hacked emails from reported Iranian sources about the Trump campaign? Especially when they were so willing to feed the ravenous hunger of Hillary Clinton cannibals with her emails in 2016. No press investigations have been had or even questions about why Donald Trump wore an ear diaper at the RNC Convention after his attempted assassination, and now there is not even a discernable scratch. Where is the doctor’s report? Donald Trump, who is running to be re-elected President of the United States, was accused of taking a bribe from Egypt with little fanfare. The story lasted about forty-eight hours, and I have neither read nor seen a reporter broach the subject with him or his running mate, Senator JD Vance. Surely, if an investigation into a car loan between Joe Biden and a family member warranted almost two years of fruitless inquiry, a bribe between an American president and Egypt should call for some press scrutiny. Ask former and convicted Democratic Senator Bob Menendez.
I have always loathed tossing around buzzwords like ‘mainstream media,’ but my faith is waning. I greatly respect and rely on the media for objective truth as I bend the knee to Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow. The term mainstream media has become part and parcel to conservatives as a substitute for the term fake news. So, it is not pleasant for me to go after the press. Still, when I read that the New York Times assigned two reporters to investigate if Vice President Kamala Harris was raised in Oakland or Berkeley, California, I wanted to vomit. How long before Donald Trump, as he did with former President Obama, claims he has detectives on the ground (in this case, India) investigating if VP Harris was born in America?
The press has entertained, dignified, and mollified Donald Trump’s whimsy, racism, bigotry, and lies to the detriment of America. This time around, the press cannot explain away its complicity. They have a history as a guide. While Trump and his minions question Harris’ race, loyalty to the country, and intelligence, as Kamala Harris said, it is “the same old tired playbook.” Please let us hope the “mainstream media’s” next question(s) inform the public, and they stop acting like suckers and losers.
