Today, the TV is filled with coverage of another school shooting, this one in Georgia.
The normal response (after thoughts and prayers) is that it’s too soon to talk about gun violence and how to end it. As far as I’m concerned, a “decent period of mourning” was over many years ago.
We need to hear from gun manufacturers. They are the ones producing the guns. How do they suggest we fix the problem of gun violence? It’s their responsibility to come up with a solution.
And to encourage them, I think the Senate should hold a hearing next week and drag the heads of these companies in to explain themselves. We need someone with standing to grill them and ask them why Congress shouldn’t just outlaw their industry. Put them on the defensive.
Of course, we always hear from gun nuts that the Second Amendment prohibits the government from doing anything about guns. So, let’s look at the Second Amendment:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State…
Stop right there. It tells us its purpose. The purpose of this part of the Constitution is to create a safe and secure society. Any reading of this amendment that doesn’t result in a safe, more secure community is invalid.
It’s time to get past old thinking on this issue. Demand answers now.
