2024, the hottest year on record and the first to exceed the 1.5°C global warming threshold-LeMonde
A series of dismal records marks the entry into uncharted territory. The year 2024 was the hottest on record since 1850, and the first to exceed the threshold of 1.5°C global warming compared to the pre-industrial era, according to the assessment of the European Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), published on Friday, January 10.
This fever pitch fueled a cascade of disasters, from Cyclone Chido in Mayotte to floods in Valencia, Spain; fires in Canada; and heatwaves in the United States. These extreme events sowed desolation and caused suffering, resulting in thousands of deaths, the destruction of ecosystems and hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
Not to mention LA is on fire, along with the usual crazies.
US rightwing fans misinformation fires as firefighters battle Los Angeles blazes — The Guardian
In what has become a common theme, rightwing media and commentary have said that diversity within the Los Angeles fire departmentis to blame for the devastation.
“Meet Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley,” X account Libs of TikTok, known for spreading anti-LBGTQ+ rhetoric, posted. “She boasts about being the first female and LGBTQ fire chief in the LA Fire Department. Promoting a culture of DEI is her priority. Does this make you feel safer?” In another tweet, the same account, which has nearly 4 million followers, wrote: “DEI will get people k*lled. DEI must DIE.”
Sometimes, I believe that we do not deserve this beautiful and diverse Earth, let alone Mars.
Especially this group of wastrels who should, in fact, be leading the recovery.
World’s richest use up their fair share of 2025 carbon budget in 10 day — The Guardian
The world’s richest 1% have already used up their fair share of the global carbon budget for 2025, just 10 days into the year.
In less than a week and a half, the consumption habits of an individual from this monied elite had already caused, on average, 2.1 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, according to analysis by Oxfam GB. It would take someone from the poorest 50% of humanity three years to create the same amount of pollution.
I have been deeply saddened after COP29 and COP16.
The oceans are heating up as the planet warms.
This past year, 2024, was the warmest ever measured for the global ocean, following a record-breaking 2023. In fact, every decade since 1984, when satellite recordkeeping of ocean temperatures started, has been warmer than the previous one.
A warmer ocean means increased evaporation, which in turn results in heavier rains in some areas and droughts in others. It can power hurricanes and downpours. It can also harm the health of coastal marine areas and sea life – coral reefs suffered their most extensive bleaching event on record in 2024, with damage in many parts of the world.
Warming ocean water also affects temperatures on land by changing weather patterns. The EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service announced on Jan. 10 that data showed 2024 was also the warmest year globally, with global temperatures about 2.9 degrees Fahrenheit (1.6 Celsius) above pre-industrial times, marking the first full calender year with warming above 1.5 C.
It has been very hard to remain motivated above and beyond our own responsibilities.
