For relative reference: the approximate 2,240 km2 of the Thwaites Ice Shelf likely to peel off and float away this Antarctic summer, is somewhat comparable to:
Long Island, NY which is 3,629 km2.
Or Seattle which is 2,470 km2.
Or Pittsburgh which is 2,208 km2.
No worries though, as Mr Beckwith explains, there’s plenty more ice waiting in wings, ready to rush in, and take Thwaites’ place.
