I have found the shutdown back and forth on Daily Kos interesting. Overall, I have been more surprised that there have not been more knives out for Schumer. I was pretty confident from the outset that the Democrats would have to abandon the shutdown. Further, I still believe the Democrats would be obliged to abandon it at some point based on my answer to this question:
Would Republicans compromise and include the health care extension into the Senate budget bill based on a shutdown?
If the answer is no (my answer) then the shutdown would harm more people than it will ever help.
Here’s my fairly rationale:
- It would be political suicide for the GOP to do so given the domination by the far right/MAGA in the GOP political world. Perhaps every single GOP Senator would be primaried by someone more extreme. (The same would be true for Democratic Senators if they gave in an negotiated a tax break for billions because of a shutdown).
- They truly would rather kill Obamacare than provide affordable healthcare. Sub-reasons:
- They honestly want to punish other people who the perceive as different than them.
- They still have Obama derangement syndrome (a polite way of saying their racism makes them to do hateful stuff).
There was simply no pathway where the GOP can say, “you know we spent 50 years stoking hate and fear, but you’re right, extending more affordable health care to less fortunate people is something we should do.”
Do I think the shutdown helped Democrats? Yes. It laid bare that the GOP simply would burn down the house rather than help regular Americans. Trump could fund SNAP, but we would rather see people not have food (better to help Argentina my little friends).
Do I think the shutdown should have been held longer? No. It was time to get off because all the points that could be made had been made.
Do I think Chuck Schumer should be given the boot? Yes. As soon as possible, because Schumer always folds.
Time to go on the record:
