Little Food Pantry is in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon, USA under the sponsorship of Burrito Brigade. Burrito Brigade is a non-profit 501c(3) organization whose mission is to feed the hungry and unhoused in Oregon by hand-delivering vegan meals for free. There is enough food in Oregon to feed every hungry person, but there is a lack of access. They are committed to engaging the community in the fight to end hunger through a network of volunteers and partnerships with organizations. There is a store in Portland offering free meals to SNAP recipients, and their fundraiser has gone through the roof! People in other COUNTRIES are donating. It makes me cry with a mixture of gratitude and shame. I keep giving what I can to food bank and community frig. If everybody does what they can, we get through this together.

There are at least two widely publicized places, the one you mentioned in Portland (I think they offer a breakfast) and another somewhere else that has a lunch/dinner. [Recipients] say, “I’m picking up for Sam” and it goes into the register, but it’s paid by donations.

Last winter, before this was even an issue, I found out about a diner in New Mexico where I could purchase meals that were then issued as tickets to the homeless. It was part of a regular program, so unhoused people could have a warm meal. Feeding America is more than just a slogan.

I’m visiting an old friend in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada’s this weekend, just ‘cause. Earlier today, we went by to donate a pickup bed of shelf-stable food he and his wife put together from an informal drive in their neighborhood and, happy to say, there were so many donations at the closest facility, they asked us to drive to another one. Which also had tons of donations.

About Katie John (1915-2013)

I told you how many grandchildren I have. When I'm gone, how are they going to live? . . . That's why I've got to do it for all my grandchildren and great-grandchildren and my great-great-grandchildren. I don't do this for myself. I'm too old for that now. I'm thinking about the many days ahead.

Katie John was an Ahtna Athabascan woman who fought tirelessly to protect the subsistence way of life for Alaska Native peoples. Born in 1915 at Slana, Alaska, she was raised to live off the land in the Native Village of Baltzulneta, or “Roasted Salmon Place”. As a strong advocate of the Ahtna Athabascan language, she helped create the first written alphabet in the 1970s and taught the language to her 14 children, six foster children, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1984, the Alaska State Board of Fisheries denied a request to subsistence fish at the now-abandoned Baltzulneta, ending a way of life that had been practiced by the Ahtna Athabaskan people for generations. This denial resulted in decades of litigation and the Supreme Court decision, Katie John v. Norton. Ultimately, she prevailed, with the Supreme Court recognizing the right of rural Alaskans to subsistence fish and hunt at their historical grounds and ensuring protection of this right on federal lands and waters. After Governor of Alaska Tony Knowles met with John, he stated, “I understand the strength, core and values that subsistence gives to Katie John’s family and to the thousands of similar families… I know-we all know that what Katie John does is not wrong. It is right-right for her, right for the village.” Not only was John a leader in protecting subsistence rights, but she empowered others to continue their Native culture and intrinsic connection with the land. — Hover for information.
