A.Y. Jackson: The Red Maple (1914)
Good evening, Kibitzers!
I’m writing this on Monday, when I just listened to the latest Ryan Hall weather forecast, and I’m smiling because a week from now, my coast was all colored dark blue on the map — not, sadly, as a political indicator, but to show anomalously low temperatures, like 10° below “normal” (whatever that is). There’s also a storm coming through around then — I don’t think it will snow here, but Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine could get a snowstorm out of it.
So that’s progress! I’m afraid the days are gone when I could pick up a Thanksgiving turkey on the Monday before that holiday and count on safely keeping it outside in the car trunk until Thursday because I had no refrigerator space for it. But any move away from t-shirt weather is, at this point, gratefully accepted (by me, anyway).
Since it is election night, and some people will be coming into elected office (hoping urgently for people we like), and others will be going out of office, I’ve assembled some songs whose titles start with “in” or “out”. As always, I surely don’t have all of them and your additions are welcome in the comments!
The Beatles: In My Life (album track from Rubber Soul, 1965, with Lennon montage) [2:34]
Hall & Oates: Out of Touch (Live Aid, 1985, as covered by MTV) [4:08]
Wilson Pickett: In the Midnight Hour (TV show The Midnight Special, 1973) [2:33]
Tim Curry: Out of Pawn (album track from Simplicity, 1981) [3:32]
Jackson Browne: In the Shape of a Heart (Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA, 1992) [5:55]
This track is here because I was 100% sure the song was called “Out of My Head”, and by the time I found it, I was bent on including it anyway. It’s not like it doesn’t fit the theme, really, but you know how I am.
Little Anthony and the Imperials: Goin’ Out of My Head (TV show The Midnight Special, 1974) [3:27]
Phil Collins: In the Air Tonight (Knebworth Festival, 1990) [6:48]
Bruce Springsteen: Out in the Street (Arizona State University, Tempe AZ, 1980) [4:59]
There are (at least) two songs called “In the Still of the Night”, and they’re both in here.
The Five Satins: In the Still of the Night (British film Sweet Beat, 1959) [3:08]
The Rolling Stones: Out of Time (Hyde Park, London, 2022) [6:01]
Ella Fitzgerald: In the Still of the Night (album track from Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Song Book, 1956) [2:39]
George Harrison: Out of the Blue (album track from All Things Must Pass, 1970; an improvised instrumental jam originally from a separate third disc, Apple Jams, included in the boxed set as a bonus) [11:16]
I know the video title says this is King Crimson, but that’s not actually the case. There's more detail about the group at the link on the album name.
Genesis/King Crimson/et al “supergroup”: In the Court of the Crimson King (video/album track from The Tokyo Tapes, 1998, a project of Steve Hackett of Genesis, and including John Wetton and Ian McDonald of King Crimson; live performance was at Tokyo Kōsei Nenkin Kaikan in December, 1996.) [7:18]
