On this amazing night of good news for our Democratic Party please let me add a bit of good news from the Pokrovsky front in Ukraine … however tenuous it might seem under the all out Russian onslaught.
The current picture from Pokrovsk is somewhat foggy and hazy. And makes for much anxiety for all who have the cause of Ukraine at heart. So please read this diary bearing mind that events may change in this most dynamic of battle fronts. But the main take away at this time is that contrary to the alarmist reports and other negative assertions, the Ukrainians have steadied the situation in the city of Pokrovsk and with the recent infusion of reinforcements are setting about the work of dealing with the Russian infils and SRGs within the city proper.
Contrary to the hyperventilating Russian propaganda that the Ukrainian Helo-borne reinforcements were destroyed upon landing, those reinforcements have actually enabled the Ukrainians to re-establish their logistics corridor. With a logistics corridor now operational, more resources and assets can be brought into the fight. Ukraine is not going to hand Pokrovsk to Putin by falling back in retreat, as some have suggested. The Battle for Donetsk is now on:

The bloody urban attritional warfare that the Russians supposedly wanted to avoid by their earlier flanking movements around Pokrovsk may be finally here. But the Ukrainians have done something else that the Russians may not have expected … blocking off the avenues for massive armored assaults into the city that the Russians were able to do in Bakhmut. Recalling with horror scenes of Russian tanks trundling right up to Ukrainian high rise defensive positions and just firing salvo after salvo at them until the building just crumbled. The Russians may still drop KAB bombs on Ukrainian positions in Pokrovsk but what is the assurance that in a fluid urban fight their own infils are not at that position?
Furthermore, with Russian armor and artillery now basically stuck out in the open fields in the northeast around Dobropilyia-Volodymyrivka-Shakhove pocket, Ukrainian counter-battery and drones are steadily picking them apart. Anybody paying attention lately to the daily tally of destroyed Russian artillery units? It has steadily climbed up into 40 plus a day. It will likely go even higher as the fall and winter weather deprives them of foliage cover in the tree lines. And the Ukrainian reconnaissance/surveillance drones stay on station 24/7:
Having had their major mechanized assault vector blocked off in the Pokrovsky front(for now anyway), the Russians are resorting to new tactics in the onslaught on Pokrovsk by sneaking in infils and sabotage groups around the city in a bid to fragment and thereby weaken the cohesion of the Ukrainian defenses there:
Russian forces adopt new tactics in Pokrovsk — military expert
“This is the idea behind the new tactic, known as the infiltration tactic, when the enemy chooses gaps in the configuration of our defense. This tactic is driven by the shortage of our personnel, which allows them to act in this way. It’s difficult, but they often manage to do it. However, this does not mean that their actions will necessarily end in success,” Lakiichuk emphasized.
“If we talk about the situation in the city, the Russian army is infiltrating from the south, mainly with units from the 2nd Combined Arms Army, into the industrial zones of Pokrovsk. Obviously, their main goal is to gain a foothold at the exits from the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad agglomeration and cut off the movement of our forces.
At the same time, part of the forces of Russia’s 51st Army, operating in the north, are also trying to infiltrate. However, their situation is much worse: our Defense Forces, the corps eliminating the Dobropillia salient, are actively countering them(Emphasis mine). The Russians are stubbornly trying to link up with the units advancing from the south,” Lakiichuk noted.

The Russians tried the reverse of this tactic in Kupiansk … infiltrating from the north and northeast, hoping to cut through the city to link up in the south .. at the critically important Kupiansk-Vozluvyi rail head. At Pokrovsk, as Pavlo Lakiichuk has described above, the Russians are rather attempting a south to north linkage.
A different geographical orientation notwithstanding, the tactic didn’t work in Kupiansk. The push at Pokrovsk is much much larger in scale and more dangerous but may ADAPTABLE INDOMITABLE UKRAINE ensure the same results in Pokrovsk as in Kupiansk. The long anticipated Battle for Donetsk is now on … all of what remains unoccupied by Russian forces.
