There is No One Person Who is the Future of the Democratic Party

The pundits can’t resist trying to make one person the representative of the entire Democratic Party.  Not only is it wrong to think this way, but it is very damaging to the party.  The Democratic Party needs to be broad and diverse to win and prevent people like Trump from gaining power.  We need Mamdani, we need Spanberger, we need Sherrill.

That means we will have to tolerate some disagreement withing the party.  That is inevitable when you support small d democracy.

I think we can try to define a couple of broad principles that should be shared.  We all should believe that government is a tool to promote the safety, health, prosperity, and freedom for all people.  We should believe that political power comes from all people, not just a small oligarchy or a would be king.

These two principles are being wrecked by the Trump regime.  We must unite all opposition to Trump to make sure that eventually the nation knows that most people repudiate the regime.  That is a necessary first step before any movement forward can happen.

The one thing I hope is that if the Democratic Party ever gains power again, it should not just try to restore what was there Jan. 19 2025.  We should try to build it better than before.  This will not be easy, as there will be a lot of different ideas about how to make it better.  But it can be an opportunity for progress.
