This is a brief diary before I leave for work. Starting a few weeks before election day, I received “hair on fire” emails, soliciting money for the Democratic judges running in the retention elections in Pennsylvania. I received these about four times a day in my inbox. Their tone was apocalyptic---unless you sent money right away it was a lock that all these judges would be voted out in a landslide. Our side was badly trailing and unless we turned things around, democracy would end. It was from the group, Defend Our Courts [see below for one of their typical postings]. In fact, most of the emails I got from this group were even more alarmist, begging for money to stave off hell.
I am very glad that all three Democratic judges in PA won, blocking any potential GOP mischief concerning voter suppression next year. But all three of them won by a landslide, over 60% of the vote. I can’t believe that the people at Defend Our Courts did not know this, especially with how big the victory margin turned out. I think these kinds of fundraising tactics are dishonest and destructive---potentially diverting money away from other races where it is more badly needed. Would love to hear other people's thoughts.

This is the worst news Democrats could possibly receive only a week out from election day.
Defend Our Court’s internal data and public polls show this race is a dead heat, and in the final week of the election, it’s coming down to a desperate race between Democrats and Republicans to turnout more voters than the other.
Right now, our canvassers and digital ads are reaching a hyper targeted set of Democrats most likely to turnout for this election. But if we are going to counter the GOP’s late surge, we need to expand our targets to even more Democrats than we had initially intended.
But the good news is that because of the support from tens of thousands of Democrats nationwide, we are one of the largest Democratic organizations involved in this race and have the infrastructure already in place to rapidly scale to counter this threat.
The ads are already cut & our canvassers are on the ground.
