It was great football weather yesterday in Baltimore for the Army – Navy game: temperature in the low 40s, partly sunny, and very little breeze. Six from our retirement community went to protest outside the stadium. Indivisible and others put out the call and probably between 500 – 1000 responded. We knew parking in the area would be a nightmare, so another resident offered to shuttle us back and forth (we had 3 offers), a great solution.
The protesters were lined up on along both sides of Russell Street, opposite the stadium. At some point, security asked those on the stadium side of the street to move to the other side, where my friends and I were. It was orderly and peaceful, as was the entire afternoon. We didn’t know what to expect. We get a lot of love at our weekly sign-wave near our retirement community, but this promised to be a very different scene. A half dozen counter-protesters with two huge Trump/Maga signs circulated through the crowd, a few attending the game wore Trump hats, and there were a goodly number of middle fingers and pro-trump shouts from those passing by (including, of course, the occasional obscenity), but all-in-all it was very calm and orderly. I even received a “Thank You for Your Service” pat on the shoulder from a Navy supporter - one of my signs read: “I Served for Democracy, Not Fascism” .
A couple of vehicle convoys drove past and 3 helicopters flew overhead in formation, but no stretch limos. We learned later that Trump came in from Ft. McHenry on one of the helicopters.
But back to the protest. You won’t hear about us in the press, but we were a large presence and 1000s going to the game had to walk right through us. I’ve included an image of 4 of us. The Unicorn costume was a big hit!
It’s not likely we made many converts, but perhaps we at least got a few of them thinking. That aside, we made an important statement and felt good about a job well done.
