Former Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA05) Announces Candidacy for 5th Congressional District, Declaring “This Is an All-Hands-on-Deck Moment”
Former Congressman Tom Perriello of Charlottesville today announced his candidacy for Congress in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District.
“It is not right that Virginians are working harder and harder just to afford the rising cost of food, electricity, and health care. We shouldn’t have to pay more out of our pockets because John McGuire and this Congress are letting reckless tariffs and rampant corruption drive up prices,” said Perriello. “You know that I’m going to show up in every community, listen, and fight with everything I got to make sure your priorities are my priorities in Congress.”
Today, 37,000 people in the 5th District are expected to lose their health care and remain uninsured, because of laws Rep. John McGuire has voted to support. Additionally 9,000 households in the district are at risk of losing their SNAP benefits, which harms families and the local businesses they support. Perriello is running to restore protections for working and middle class families.

Bruce Blakeman Jumps Into Race for Governor of New York
Bruce Blakeman, the Republican Nassau County executive and an ally of President Trump, announced on Tuesday that he would run for governor of New York, ending months of speculation.
His decision sets up a potentially explosive primary clash with Representative Elise Stefanik, a hard-charging and younger Republican who has already declared her candidacy against Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat.
Ms. Stefanik had worked furiously behind the scenes to fend off any primary challenge to maximize her chances against Ms. Hochul in a Democratic-leaning state. A fight with Mr. Blakeman now threatens to drain meaningful resources and shift the focus away from the incumbent.

Brad Lander set to challenge Rep. Dan Goldman from the left
NEW YORK — Brooklyn progressive Brad Lander is planning to launch his bid for Congress as soon as Wednesday, challenging Rep. Dan Goldman from the political left in a district that went big for Zohran Mamdani, three people familiar with his preparations told POLITICO.
The city comptroller is expected to open his campaign with a pivotal endorsement from Mamdani, the democratic socialist mayor-elect’s first formal nod since his November election win upended the Democratic landscape. Lander has also sought support from progressive Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, according to two people close to Lander.
Lander shot his campaign launch video, with some scenes from his Park Slope community, two people with knowledge of his operations said. And he is interviewing for the Working Families Party endorsement, four more people confirmed to POLITICO. The people looped into Lander’s plans were granted anonymity to protect a sensitive rollout process.

Miami mayor’s race: Democrat leads Republican backed by Trump
Democrat Eileen Higgins is on track to defeat Trump-backed opponent Emilio González in Tuesday night’s runoff for Miami mayor, according to preliminary election night results.
The position of Miami mayor is technically nonpartisan. But party politics have become a major focus in the election after multiple major GOP politicians announced endorsements for González, a former city manager and retired U.S. Army colonel who garnered endorsements from President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, among others.
In mid-November, the Democratic National Committee announced it was going “all in” to back Higgins, a former county commissioner and mechanical engineer by trade. Her endorsements include Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Miami Congresswoman Frederica Wilson.
