Ohio announces its first human H5N1 case, in a poultry worker. No information on the man’s condition has been offered. Poultry workers are more likely than dairy workers to report flu-like symptoms, rather than just conjunctivitis, but most US infections so far have been mild.
Three veterinarians who work with cattle (out of 150 sampled) proved to have antibodies to H5N1, indicating recent infection. None of them knew they had been exposed, and none recalled having any symptoms. One practiced in Georgia and South Carolina, which have had no known cases in cattle.
"These findings suggest there could be U.S. states with A(H5)-positive people and animals that have not yet been identified," the study authors wrote, adding that the risk to the general public remains low.
A nasal spray vaccine technology is being developed. This version of RNA vaccine would not require cold chain transport or needles.
NIH researchers tested an antibody treatment that protected primates from severe bird flu. Anything would help.

Chronic wasting disease continues to be identified in more cervids (deer, elk, moose, reindeer) Two more Arkansas counties have identified it, Cleburne and Baxter. They join Craighead, Independence, Marion, Searcy, Conway, and Stone counties. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said it has tested more than 67,500 deer and elk across the state to date, identifying CWD in 1,970 deer and 56 elk. That’s about 3%. Nebraska has detected CWD in 68 of its 93 counties. In 2023, 30 of 600 deer tested were positive, that’s 5%. www.cidrap.umn.edu/… Captive deer in Louisiana parishes, two wild deer in Iowa, and two deer in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, have also recently tested positive. Most states have found the disease, which is caused by misfolded proteins called prions, which ARE NOT destroyed by cooking.
No human cases of CWD have ever been identified, but authorities advise against eating the meat of infected animals, mindful of what happened with mad cow disease.
