Sometimes I wonder what the world would have been like if President Lincoln would have let the Confederacy secede.
We would have had the free North and the slave South. The South, like North Korea, or communist East Germany would have had to have built walls and border guards trying to maintain their flawed and failing society. Eventually, African Americans, much as we did during Jim Crow, would have figured out a way to escape, and that evil society would have collapsed, just like communist East Germany did, and North Korea will eventually.
Instead, we allowed the Plantation philosophy to spread from South to North. The philosophy in which agricultural plantation owners to this day rely on farm workers who receive less than subsistence pay and we say that's ok? The philosophy that holds that corporations "are people too". The philosophy that teaches the lie in school that capitalism IS democracy.
Amazon, Google, Meta, Verizon, Comcast, Warner Universal, Exxon, and all the rest, they are the modern day plantation owners. Their money buys Congressmen and Senators, because the Supreme Court has held that aggregations of money have the same rights in a Democracy as flesh and blood human beings.
We are going into a dark time. My grandparents had to flee the Florida panhandle, after my grandfathers, grandfather fought in a black regimen in the civil war to insure his and his progenies freedom. They had to flee because the plantation owners were allowed to keep the South, and have spent the last 150 years spreading their philosophy from South to North and West.
Most people reading this don't realize what is happening. A few do. Liberals have been in denial a long time.
But when the time comes, will you be willing to do what my great great grandad did? Or will you let them make you a slave?
