I caught this Texas Tribune story from Digby. The general story is about the fear that is rampant among Latinos in Texas who have family members who are undocumented and worry about Trump’s deportation plans. But the story does zoom in on one man who voted for Trump and NOW fears his undocumented father will be deported.
EL PASO — On a recent windy, cold afternoon in this border city, dozens of people gathered at a park for an immigrant rights demonstration to denounce the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Some held signs reading: “Immigrants Make America Great.”
Alan, a local police officer, and his wife came and held a Mexican flag. He said he joined the demonstration because he worries about his father, an undocumented immigrant who works at a farm in southern New Mexico.
Alan said he voted for Donald Trump because of worries about the economy and because he believes Trump is pro-police and would combat the public’s negative perception of law enforcement. He said he believed Trump’s promises to make everyday items affordable for middle-class families.
But after two weeks of Trump in the White House, Alan — who declined to give his last name because he fears retaliation against his father — said he now regrets his vote. Partly because he was angered when Trump granted clemency to people involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
There are just so many levels of stupidity here to unpack.
First, you’re fuckin’ cop, and you don’t know that Trump is a criminal? There was Trump praising the Jan 6th insurrectionists for beating all those cops and calling them patriots. Then, Trump was found liable for RAPE of a woman. Finally, Trump broke campaign finance laws and is now a convicted felon. But this idiot thought Trump was “pro-police”?
Barney Fife had more brains and was more competent than “Alan.”
Finally, (and why do I need to keep pointing this out again and again?) PRICES FOR GROCERIES HAVE NEVER GONE DOWN AFTER AN INFLATIONARY SPIKE! Good Lord! I swear that computers and cell phones have made people dumber!
Oh, and Alan thought that Trump would ONLY deport the criminals in his mass deportations. He doesn’t specifically say that in the article, but he disagrees with how Trump is carrying out the mass deportations. Translation: only the criminal immigrants would be deported and all the other nice undocumented people would be left alone.
Digby was trying to have a little empathy for this guy, but she admitted that she didn’t feel any now. I sure as hell know that I don’t. I’m one of those federal employees who’s being threatened by Trump, so excuse me if I am like, “I hope they do deport your dad!”
I got another OPM email today telling me that collective bargaining agreements do not trump “management rights,” so my union contract is “unenforceble and not legal” when it comes to telework and remote work. In other words, Fuck YOU! Trump can do whatever he wants! Therefore, my empathy is gone for Trump voters!
