Hi Everyone. I’m a long time reader, but have never written a diary before today. I was compelled to write it because I saw something in today’s news that was so disturbing, it inspired me to make sure this community took notice.
In the past week or so, the media has published reports of agreements between the US and several Central and South American countries. Until today, these agreements have generally covered repatriation of the country’s own citizens after they have been deported by the US.
Today, an announcement was made about another of these, with El Salvador. This one is different, however, because it includes two groups of people not mentioned in agreements with other countries: citizens of other nations, including the incarcerated, and US citizens.
“The country will continue accepting Salvadoran deportees who illegally entered the US, he [President Nayib Bukele] said. It will also “accept for deportation any illegal alien in the United States who is a criminal from any nationality, be they MS-13 or Tren de Aragua and house them in his jails,” he said – referring to two notorious transnational gangs with members from El Salvador and Venezuela.
In addition, Bukele “has offered to house in his jails dangerous American criminals in custody in our country, including those of US citizenship and legal residents,” [Marco] Rubio said.”

Rather than giving any indication that the US would not be taking the Salvadoran President up on his offer to accept third country nationals and US citizens, Rubio talked up the benefits. He spoke about the matter on a visit to Costa Rica.
“There are obviously legalities involved. We have a Constitution,” Rubio said at a news conference Tuesday in San Jose with Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves. “But it’s a very generous offer. No one’s ever made an offer like that — and to outsource, at a fraction of the cost, at least some of the most dangerous and violent criminals that we have in the United States. But obviously, the administration will have to make a decision.”

Apparently, privatizing US prisons wasn’t enough. Now we are exploring outsourcing imprisonment to other countries? What will happen to the prisoners when they finish their sentences? Do they stay in El Salvador or will the US send them back to their home countries? What about US citizens? How do they get back? Can they come back? Are they still US citizens? And how will the US make up the revenue from all of that sweet, sweet, practically free labor prisoners perform?
When we put this together with the efforts to end birthright citizenship and FOTUS’ mention of imprisoning people at Guantanamo Bay, the picture is terrifying. Anger the king and you will be without a country.
