Yesterday, a diary from a staff member here claimed that Democratic senators appeal likely to reject the Republican continuing resolution spending bill, which not only slashes social spending to a terrible degree, but more importantly, codifies the power of DOGE and Elon Musk to simply make up whatever spending levels they like, essentially destroying our democracy.
Unfortunately, Josh Marshall at TPM is reporting this supposed ‘Democratic resistance’ is all just a kabuki show. Democratic senators will allow cloture on the bill in return for a show vote for a clean continuing resolution which everyone knows will fail. In other words, they will give dramatic speeches against the CR while allowing it to pass.
To quote Marshall “I’d love to be wrong about all this. But I’m not. If you’re pissed, I’d keep calling your senators and making your voices heard on this. Nothing is over until it’s over. Nothing. But right now the above is the plan.”
This disgusting abdication IS NOT SET IN STONE. Please contact your senator, Senator Schumer, and every other senator you can to urge them not just to vote no to the continuing resolution, but to VOTE NO ON CLOTURE AT ALL COSTS.
If you don’t believe me, call anyway. It’s too important to wait and see. Believe me, I’ve never wanted to be wrong this much in my entire life.
Look, no one wants a government shutdown. But Musk and DOGE are already shutting the government down. Ultimately, the party which will be blamed is the party which controls all the branches of government. The only way to fight is to prevent this terrible bill.
