Open Thread groups are great places for new kosaks to ask questions and pick up DK etiquette. Some groups are friendly in different ways than others, e.g., energy level. Most OTGs meet daily, and the list begins with those, by order of usual publication time. The ones that meet weekly are listed after the dailies.
Additions and changes to this list are do’able if admins comment with links as to what’s needed. (if the group has no active admins, editors can do it.) After this diary’s comment thread closes, kosmail to the author.
Clicking the homepage or diary list link at a given group will show you if it’s currently active. Note: “Homepage” recently began connecting to DK4/Perl pages at times. If that happens, click PROFILE at those pages, at the right end of the row of links, and that should solve that.
Note: Many open thread groups welcome your promoting other diaries from around DK in their thread, in the form of courteous, appreciative comments. First skim down the comment thread of the given post to see where to do it. NEVER put promo comments high in an existing thread in an interruptive, jam-it-in way. If there’s no comment explicitly inviting community links to be replied there, put yours at the end of thread the same way all other commenters do when they’re not replying to anyone else.
See the last section of this diary for basic group how-to (e.g., the most effective way to make contact., tips for founding new groups, etc.) For more indexes to more kinds of DK groups, go to <big>The DK Group FOR Groups.</big>. (Click the FOLLOW button or bookmark it, to keep up on new indexes.)
BTW, use this tag-search for open-thread diaries that may not have groups or established series. At that tagpage, click at the top of the <tt>LAST USE</tt> column there to see the series or group open thread in the moment.

◼ Street Prophets Diary List & homepage daily: Coffee Hour apprx 1pm leftkost/4pm east, brunch occasional weekends apprx 7:30am leftkost/10:30am east
founded 2011 by Ojibwa — Street Prophets is the forum that mobilizes progressive people of faith to name, discuss and take action on critical political and religious issues. So come on in and make yourself at home. We believe that most, if not all topics touching on faith and politics are appropriate on Street Prophets. While this forum represents people of widely differing (and often directly conflicting) theologies, our goal here is to focus on forwarding the progressive political discussion that our shared values make possible. The Street Prophets blog was originally founded by Daniel Schultz, a ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, and Markos Moulitsas, as an offspring of Daily Kos. Street Prophets seeks to change the "moral values" conversation by fostering community; promoting informed opinion and moving its members to action. We are believers in "justice, freedom, compassion and love," in the words of Rita Nakashima Brock. We are progressive, Democratic-leaning and vitally concerned with those whom Jesus called "the least of these." We are the faithful for whom the religious right emphatically does not speak. Its vibrant community of netroots faithful includes a broad range of faiths, including devout Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jews, Mormons, Muslims, Atheists, Animists, and Neo-pagans. All who seek to promote a new conversation about the role of religion in America's public life are welcome here.

And for several hundred more (amongst the 3,000 or so):
■ NewDKGroups diary series ■ or use the site search engine in Groups mode. The limitation there is that the engine “finds” by searching terms in the original URL wording of all group names, so if the group was too whimsically or cryptically named, you might need other strategies for finding ones that share your interests. E.g., view the profile/homepages of kosaks whose comments and diaries share your interests, to see what DK groups they’re in, and click through from there.
Basic Group How-to: All that really matters to know right now is:
🟦Not all groups are active at any given time: click on any link to see publish dates showing which are which (“no diaries yet” sometimes means “all diaries deleted”). 🟦 A group without site-active, skilled admins cannot ‘hire’ new members, promote, or ‘fire’ existing members, but if it has site-active, skilled editors, it CAN reblog. A group with neither site-active skilled editors or admins can’t do anything groupish, but site-active contributors in it may be interestable in starting a new group for that area (so might editors, for that matter) — for best results, kosmail to one another and get organized before starting a new group, keeping in mind that site history shows competition among groups can doom both/all, but mutual support and cooperation lifts them together. 🟦 The two main causes of groups crashing&burning on take-off are ■ founders have no admin skills and failed to recruit skilled folks in advance; ■ aside from the occasional diary series NewDKGroups hardly anyone in DK will know a new group exists unless founders & crew vigorously promote it among neighboring groups and across the site. 🟦 Groups can merge if their admins agree; it just requires picking one of them (potentially with a name change) and posting a final diary at the other linking to the merged one. 🟦 If you want to contact a group, use the homepage link, and when there the MEMBERS button to find the most recently active admins and editors, then click on their name to message to them...
...because messages to group do NOT put a message alert at anyone’s mail icon, nor at the MESSAGES line in anyone’s WelcomeBackbox so a message to group might sit for days, even weeks, unseen. 🟦 To view original Perl/DK4 founding pages for founders, start date etc., click homepage link, go up to the URL, remove groups from the URL, replace with user. hit go. 🟦 Official site documents on groups are HERE; see also community tutorials.
If there's no group near you, make friends with neighboring ones. Or do it anyway — why not? :) The most active meet-space groups get together at times for food, local protests and demonstrations, food, volunteerism, cats, and food, sometimes even road-trips. They might use kosmail or listserves or email to communicate about it.
NOTE: Some of the “homepage” links recently began connecting to DK4/Perl member-pages. If you find that happening, click on the PROFILE link on those pages at the right end of the row of links, and that should solve that.
