As you have no doubt heard, our current band of regime irregulars (you know, the best in the business according to the Mad King) planned an attack on foreign soil. VIA THE MESSAGING APP SIGNAL. And worse, they invited the Editor-in-Chief of The Atlantic to the groupchat and NEVER NOTICED. Am I the only person who, when added to a groupchat, immediately checks to see who else is in the chat?!
There are so many things to be outraged about, but this diary isn’t about that. To be honest, I’m still recovering from a whole lot of Life happening recently and still don’t have the bandwidth for a substantive diary:
- Last week I shared that one of my closest friends had passed away. Her husband and our remaining band of three friends got together this weekend so he could fill us in on plans for her memorial service next month, and asked if we wanted to say anything. So, I’ll be penning some words to deliver for that.
- My father-in-law passed away last Wednesday. Mr Brillig was there, with his Mom and two sisters. A plot of land has been identified on the larger piece of rural NH land my inlaws own/live on, and this Saturday Dad will be laid to rest with an official memorial service this summer. He was 89 and I will miss him terribly.
- This is the second year I’ve volunteered as a Netroots Nation panel submission evaluator. I’ve got 49 proposals to evaluate and rank by Thursday morning so the staff can make final decisions. It’s a lot but it’s interesting (and also like choosing your favorite children when you LOVE 23 panels but can only recommend 15).
When my brain is overwhelmed, what do I turn to for inspiration? Yep, you longtime readers know… music. And with today’s clusterf-ck at the top of the news cycle, I’m thinking about stupidity. And fools. And those who believe in them. Here’s a few songs that came to mind (link to video in the song title) to get us started:
- Ship Of Fools — World Party — “Save me, save me from tomorrow / I don't want to sail with this ship of fools,”
- The Idiots Are Taking Over — NOFX — This 2003 punk song feels both prescient and evergreen. “Followers following fables / Philosophies that enable them to rule without regard”
- American Idiot — Green Day — A favorite song of mine for decades, frontman Billy Joe Armstrong delivered an epic troll of Elmo Musk during their debut performance in Johannesburg, swapping lyrics to sing “I’m not a part of an Elon agenda”.
What A Fool Believes — Kenny Loggins & Michael MacDonald — Loggins’ version came out first but the Doobie Brothers version became the standard. “But what a fool believes he sees / No wise man has the power to reason away / What seems to be / Is always better than nothing”

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From yours truly, brillig:
This comment from GeorgeO1984 makes me wonder if there will be a companion set of Humvee, Helicopter and Firetruck vehicles. Found in Alix Breeden’s FP article Here's where cosplaying homeland security chief will be performing next.
