Dear Republicans, When bullies approach you and say, vote for this [terrible and unconstitutional action][thoroughly unqualified and embarrassing nominee], or else we will fund an opponent to run against you in your next primary, the proper response is “Fuck you” and a no vote. I get it, you think you are a hero, one who will stand up to the bullies when they cross that line and you are saving your no vote for then, while the person who might replace you in the next election would be such an ass-kisser that they would not. So we need you there to protect us.
In the meantime, they are decimating programs that your constituents rely on, like VA Hospitals and Medicaid, public school funding and college assistance, weather prediction and disaster recovery, and making it harder for their (grand)parents to start their Social Security payments. They are firing many people who work for the government, illegally and on bogus charges, and with no thought about whether any aspect of what they do is important—I suspect that in many cases, the people doing the firing do not even know what the agency they are decimating does. Wait until fire season starts—there are many fewer people available to fight them. Children are dying of measles and our Secretary of Health and Human Services is telling them to drink cod liver oil. They are arresting people who are here legally and detaining them because they said things the President does not like, a clear violation of the First Amendment. They are deporting people they claim to be gang members, without demonstrating that they are—what is to stop them from deporting you or me? They do not even seem to care whether the deportees are US Citizens: if Trump doesn’t like them, out they go. They are blackballing law firms for defending their clients—if that is not what law firms are supposed to do, what is? They have cancelled many scientific research projects and therefore eliminated whatever benefits might have arisen from them. They have eliminated the Native Code Talkers, who were instrumental in winning WW2, from all government web sites because they were not white men. They are actively talking about invading friendly countries to annex their territory.
Elon can already determine how many Ukrainians die every day by turning on and off his Starlink satellites, and he is cancelling US contracts that were duly awarded to other companies and replacing them with contacts to his own companies. He is now so firmly embedded in our own infrastructure that the next time he wants something he does not have to threaten you with a primary opponent, he can turn off the government with a flip of a switch. There is a reason we spread our contracts over multiple companies, so that no one has too much control.
So my question for you is, if not this, what? If not now, when? How will you know when the time has come to stop bowing down and say no?
