Anyone else experiencing déjà vu in Virginia, or is it just me? Let me explain. Back in 2017, a year after Trump won his first election, Virginia had the opportunity to reject the “mandate” of the Republican federal trifecta. And that’s exactly what Virginia did! The nation watched as Democrats swept all three statewide races; the Governor, Attorney General and Lieutenant Governor, as well as flipping 15 House of Delegate seats. In fact, they nearly won the majority in the House, but fell short by a single seat due to a tie in the 94th district, resulting in the Republican candidate’s name being pulled out of a canister, with Delegate Shelly Simonds losing the election (A reminder that EVERY VOTE COUNTS!). The following year, during the 2018 midterms, Democrats continued to show momentum when they took back the House, which means the writing is on the wall for 2025.
As we’ve attempted to maintain our sanity during these last two chaotic months of a second Trump administration, Virginia is poised to make history with our first woman Governor and surpass our 2017 results. Two years ago, when I ran to unseat Republican Caucus Chair, Amanda Batten, I did so with a small, but mighty campaign team and the lowest budget for a competitive race. In fact I spent a little more than half of what my opponent spent ($332k compared to her $624k), and yet we still had the third highest voter turnout and fell short of flipping the seat by ONLY 667 votes.
When people ask how were we were able to move the needle so far and prove all the naysayers wrong, the answer is simply. I did the work of personally knocking more than 6,000 doors, hosted and attended every community event possible, engaged voters across political lines with real conversations, and most importantly, I listened to the people! I was also fueled through a grassroots movement of more than 6,350 unique donors, ZERO corporate dollars and a social media following that amplified my message.
Now we are back to finish the job and former VP Harris proved we have the numbers to get it done! Kamala Harris beat Trump by nearly 5 points and won the 71st district with more than 2,400 votes, this past election. We’ve been deemed the 3rd most competitive Delegate race, currently held by a Republican, and are READY to close the gap for 2025!
