At the gate of the convention center where Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke in Nampa Idaho last night, a dozen pro-Trump protesters made a small grove of American flags. Attendees outnumbered them a thousand to one, though. The center was jammed.
The flag display reminded me once again that folks on the right use the stars and stripes as the MAGA flag. They fly it from homes along with Trump campaign flags. They fly it from trucks next to the flag of the confederacy. They use it to shout that they’re real patriots and Democrats are un-American.
Now while their beloved Trump is flouting the Constitution itself, suppressing press freedom, disappearing students who exercise freedom of speech, ignoring Supreme Court orders, grabbing control of the purse from Congress, and...well, the list is long and you know it. Now while Trump is making a stand against all American values, it’s time we took back the American flag.
We can wave it at protests and fly it at home and show it wherever MAGA shows it. We can make it no longer say “there goes a Republican.” We take it away as a symbol of MAGA and make it once again the symbol of all Americans, the symbol of what our nation stands for.
