After reading the story about the cuts to Meals on Wheels, it dawned on me that there is a way to turn this to our advantage. We just have to keep asking administration officials why they no longer wish poor, older, and disabled Americans to have food. If we keep asking about cuts to Meals on Wheels and School Lunch Programs, eventually, one of the officials will let slip with some truth about either their motives or perspectives.
While we do not know what quote will escape their lips, eventually, and probably quite soon, there will be the 2025 equivalent of, “Let them Eat Cake.” It might be something along the lines that these are folks who no longer contribue to society. It might be that if they were good people they would have friends who could go to the food bank for them. But, at some point, someone in a pressed suit standing in front of a display of wealth and power will say something to indicate that they just do not think folks’ who need these programs are folks that matter.
My guess is that it will be something like, “What good does it do to feed them. They’ll just will want to eat again next week.” Or, “How is feeding poor people efficient?”
Then we have them. We run ads and deliver speeches and elect politicians who think the attitude shown in that line is despicable. We paint them as the heartless folks their policies indicate that they are.
This strategy should solidify Democratic support. It should capture support from most Independents. It should even draw in some of the MAGA folks who simply thought that the, “Them,” that Trump was referring to was others, not folks who they knew and loved. The leopards were not supposed to eat the faces of their folks.
We will not get them all. But, we don’t need them all. Once the Democrats are united and the MAGA base is confused, we win.
It is not clear that Marie Antoinette even said the phrase, “Let them eat cake.” Presuming she did, the quote illustrates less her heartlessness than her cluelessness. Within the current leadership of the Trump administration there is an abundance of both heartlessness and cluelessness. We just have to push them, until they give us the quote to make it obvious to all.
Then, we make them eat it.
