We take the modern world for granted.
Everything today is so much simpler and safer because of government regulations and inspections. Your food is safe to eat because a government bureaucrat ensured that it is so. Your car is safe to drive because a government bureaucrat insisted that it be so. The school your children attends does not collapse on them because a government bureaucrat enforced the rules that make construction safe. Everything we do is so much more frictionless than even in our parents or grandparents time because the government forces businesses to behave, to act against the temptation to make the quickest buck.
DOGE is changing all of that.
DOGE is destroying the capacity for the government to ensure that you and your loved ones are safe. They are doing this primarily for two reasons: to allow businesses to make more money and to take money from you and put it in their own pockets in the form of tax cuts. If the government stops enforcing customer safety rules, there is less compliance cost to firms. Yeah, they may get sued, but firms generally make more money from violations than they lose from court cases given the nature of our court system. And they want the money that benefits you, in terms of a safer world, to go to them instead. They are making these changes all over the government, and you and your family will suffer. Today’s example is milk.
The FDA is no longer going to test milk and other dairy products for safety because DOGE has cut their staff. This means that the safety of your milk, for example, is at the mercy of the firms producing the milk. You likely won’t see a decline in safety right away, as current processes assume the FDA will be checking. But it is inevitable that standard will slip under pressure to be more profitable or just out of the basic human nature that things that no one checks tend toward being ignored. So, who cares — raw milk is supposed to be good for you, right?
Yeah. No. Not unless you think pathogens such as salmonella are fine. And if you do: NO, THEY ARE NOT!!!! Sorry to yell, but they can and have literally killed people, especially children and elderly. People used to have to take the time to boil milk in the morning for the day to ensure that it was safe for kids. Now, thanks to government bureaucrats, your safety preparations for milk consists of buying it from the store and opening the jug. I don’t know about you, but I prefer that world.
DOGE does not. That world means that there is less money for billionaires and more responsibility placed on firms. If there is a choice between the safety of you and your family and more money for rich people, DOGE chooses the rich people every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Not even basic food safety is considered important enough to continue.
