The Washington Post is finally catching up, I saw a story there today, on how consumers can make an enormous impact on politics. I am a retired history and civics teacher, and I always managed to get in a lesson or two in my classes, on consumer responsibility. We the people, are a nation of consumers. We spend our days on TV and online, watching myriads of commercials. Mostly for things we really don’t need. We are told that as consumers we must spend our money on American made goods, in order to create a strong economy. That is more or less true. Of course, even though the GOP refuses to understand or recognize it, the things we buy, either come from foreign countries, or at least one part of them does. Think appliances, cars, clothing, technology, and so much more.
We are told we have to buy all these things in order to keep America strong. Even if we don’t need them. How many pairs of sneakers, how many pairs of jeans, how many pots and pans, how many computing devices do we need?
But as consumers, we have an enormous amount of power. We can decide where to spend our money. We can decide what we and our families actually need. We can decide where to shop, and what companies and countries to support.
As shown with Tesla, and Target, boycotts work! Take the time to do your homework. Check out the lists of corporations that gave money to Project 2025. Screw them-don’t buy their stuff! And Amazon should be a last resort!
Getting off you’re behind and going out to buy something in a store, gets you some fresh air, and some walking, you also get to interact with other people and it’s good for you!
I worked full-time for 40 years, raised three children, worked other part-time jobs, and still took the time to check labels in the things I bought, and I didn’t have Amazon. So yes folks it is doable.
