The first two protests I attended this year were both in the city of San Diego, but my town is much closer to the small city of Temecula in Riverside County. I went to a protest there last month, though with some trepidation, because Temecula is quite conservative (book-burners on the school board). I was surprised that time because there were 1,000 protesters there, and much support from cars passing by, though there were also plenty of people raising middle fingers. Because it was a positive experience, and because I feel the residents of Temecula are more in need of the message, I decided to return to Temecula for No Kings.
The protests occur at the intersection of Rancho California Road and Ynez Road; there is a park on the southeast corner called the Duck Pond, which is how the protest location is given, but all the protesters are, of course, by the roads in order to be visible to those driving by. I wore the I AM AN IMMIGRANT t-shirt I got at NetRoots Nation 2017 (in Atlanta), and rather than carrying a sign, I decided, in honor of Flag Day, to carry a full-sized American flag.
The protest was scheduled for 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. I got there about 10 minutes early, but there were already more people there than there were at last month’s protest, and it only got bigger. The attendance estimate I heard (and I have no clue as to how accurate it is) is between 3,500 and 4000. I only took four photos, making some attempt at showing how large the crowd was, but it was ineffective. In any case, here’s what I’ve got:
The handmaids’ contingent.
I probably should have taken photos of some of the signs, but taking photos while carrying a flag is kind of difficult.
Here is a video shot by a friend.
The protest was scheduled to end at 1:00 PM, and the crowd did thin out a little, but there were plenty of people still there, so I stayed. At 2:00 PM, however, after standing around for 3+ hours, my feet were starting to hurt, so I decided to call it quits and headed home. The protest had gone off without incident—or so I thought. It turns out, when I checked BlueSky, there had been an incident: A MAGA carrying a loaded gun.
I didn’t see this at all while I was there. I will note that he dragged the flag he was carrying on the ground, which is something that anyone who respects the flag would NOT allow to happen. ‘Nuff said. It’s what I would expect of a MAGA.
