I had to laugh when I read this, but among “other news,” the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security and Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability are launching an investigation into 200 nongovernmental agencies (NGO’s) that have provided aid to immigrants and migrants during the Biden Administration. Two of those NGO’s are run by the Catholic Church.
Catholic Charities USA and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) are among those named in the investigation. According to a June 11 press release, the probe will investigate whether the NGOs “used taxpayer dollars to facilitate illegal activity” by migrants who entered the U.S. during the Biden administration.
All the NGOs named in the investigation have been sent a letter requesting that they fill out a survey. The letter also expresses concern that some of the NGOs continue to actively advise “illegal aliens on how to avoid and impede law enforcement officials, which can only be seen as an attempt to undermine the work of the federal government.”
Tsk, tsk, tsk. Religious groups scream about their rights, and they take all kinds of shit cases to the corrupt SCOTUS to make the U.S. more “christian.” But here we have the House GOP deciding to attack one of those very religions they swear up and down they respect.
Is this a grenade thrown into one of the biggest backers of Trump and Trumpism, right wing Catholics?
As a former Catholic, I have my doubts.
Looney reactionary Catholics will probably applaud this investigation because it’s going after “liberal bishops” who are “coddling criminals.” Forget what their religious leaders tell them, even though the Catholic Church prides itself on HIERARCHY. American Catholics are great on being “cafeteria Catholics.” They pick and choose what they want to believe, and to hell with all the rest out of the Vatican.
It’s why reactionary Catholics in Congress can vote to further impoverish the poor and transfer that money to the wealthy. Fuck what Jesus said about the poor. And it’s why they can allow women to die rather than allow them to obtain reproductive care. Or just to treat women like shit because they are all “fallen.” Forget about that “No stones” saying.
In other words, they are every bit as bad as their protestant brothers and sisters who do the same damn thing.
However, for those other Catholics who didn’t bother to vote or took a pass on Harris, being investigated by men and women who think like Stephen Miller should be a wake up call. If they can punish the Church on this matter, who knows what else they may do to American Catholics? Anything I would imagine.
