Hi, it’s your Oregon guy again, with another one of my endless stock of pictures. Another one of the Oregon Coast.
Tolovana Beach is a district of the small coastal town of Cannon Beach, with a wonderful public access. Here you’ll find an icon of the Oregon Coast known as Haystack Rock.
That is not in this picture. It’s out of frame on the right. What got me about this is that stack in the far distance with the building on it. Commissioned in 1881 and operant through the 1950’s the erratic weather and harsh conditions gave it (the island is called Tillamook Rock) the nickname “Terrible Tilly”. Much photography demonstrating why can probably be found via Google.
Ever since the late 50s various private concerns have owned it. The last tried to make a paying go of being a columbarium — a place where funeral urns are interred and maintained. It no longer functions as such, though it’s still privately owned.
What I didn’t know prior to this photo was that Terrible Tilly is visible from Tolovana Beach.
The distance as-the-gull-flies? 5.8 statute miles.
